Student Involvement

The Clinic enlists volunteer 3rd and 4th Year Law Students with a background in Commercial and Human Rights subjects. The law students, under the supervision of practicing advocates, take the lead in clients’ matters. The students enroll in the Clinic for the academic year (September - May). Their participation currently is not for credit, it is akin to a co-curricular.

The law student volunteers attend the Clinical programs and activities, where they work in teams with volunteer advocates. Through such involvement the students’ and advocates’ pro bono spirit is enhanced. The students also get hands-on experience working on legal matters for real clients, and clients receive focused, high-quality, free legal representation. Students assist low-income entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations to foster economic development, increase access to capital, promote job growth and business survival.

While under supervision, the student volunteers do the following:
•    interview clients regarding their businesses and legal needs;
•    draft, review, and negotiate contracts and other legal documents;
•    perform legal research and due diligence;
•    counsel clients in writing, by telephone, and in person in response to their requests;
•    support building of client case files;
•    work on law and policy initiatives including advising on laws and policies;
•    provide community education and empowerment on legal issues;
•    consult with subject-matter specialists.

Through these representations, students develop valuable and widely transferable lawyering skills and substantive legal knowledge, while experiencing how business lawyers can serve the community by engaging in pro bono work.

The Clinic offers the opportunity to law students to gain experience on topics such as:
